Basic Botany: Certificate in Native Plants Core Course

$105 Registration Fee

Explore the biology of plants in this introduction to general plant anatomy, morphology, physiology, evolution, and development. This course presents the fundamental information about plants upon which other courses in the native plant certificate program will build, particularly Plant Taxonomy. With an emphasis on relating form to function, it surveys the origins of plants along with their basic forms and life processes. Students will become acquainted with plant tissues and structures, as well as their roles in the life of plants. This class will be taught virtually over a period of several sessions in a dynamic and varied format.

 

This course consists of five elements: three live, online programs, a self-paced lab on plant anatomy, and an overview of plant physiology.

  • Part 1 – Online Class Session: Defining & Describing Plants (1 hour) 11/5; 6pm-7pm
  • Part 2 – Self-Paced Learning: Plant Anatomy & Physiology (1 hour)
  • Part 3 – Online Class Session: Plant Morphology & Reproduction (2 hours) 11/10; 6pm-8pm
  • Part 4 – Self-Paced Learning Exercise: Plant Dissection (1 hour)
  • Part 5 – Online Class Session: Plant Development & Adaptations (2 hours) 11/17; 6pm-8pm

  • Evolutionary origins of plants
  • Basic history of botany and plant taxonomy
  • Plant structures (internal and external)
  • Plant life cycles and reproduction (pollination, fruits)
  • Introduction to plant genetics
  • Adaptations of plants and seeds
