Conservation LandscapingCertificate in Native Plants

February 25, 2017, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Conservation Landscaping

$50 General Admission, $45 Members

Choices we make while creating and maintaining our gardens have an impact on soil, water, and wildlife. Some design choices even affect our management practices and can reduce the amount of time, effort, and chemicals we need to maintain an attractive space.

This course will offer you suggestions on plants, management, and design techniques that you could use in your own gardens. An emphasis will be placed on mimicking natural systems to work with nature–not against it–and will hopefully give you a greater palette of plants and techniques for use at your own home. Stephen Liverman worked for the University of West Alabama Center for the Study of the Black Belt, a division charged with promoting the natural and cultural resources of the area. Liverman worked for seven years creating a botanical garden on the campus that mimicked the black belt’s native ecosystems.

He is currently residing in Athens, working with New Urban Forestry, and setting up a woodwork shop that advocates for the use of unique native trees.
