Imagine the most peaceful place you know, the place you go to seek solace and deal with the difficult things life throws at you. What does it look like? Is it to be found in nature? Is it filled with life – the sights, the sounds, the smells? I bet your special place isn’t a collection of little round balls of shrubs distanced from each other by an ocean of mulch. Why do we make the choice to surround ourselves with anything other than that which we truly value and which promotes life? Join Patrick McMillan, director of the South Carolina Botanical Garden and host of Expeditions with Patrick McMillan, as he explains how we can transform our landscape into an oasis for life, one which is uniquely American and can help stem the tide of decline in our insects, wildlife and plant communities. The South Carolina Botanical Garden serves as a model for encouraging life with our choices. The transformation of the SC Botanical Garden’s landscape has resulted in a dramatic increase in bird, small mammal, and insect species, as well as human visitors. Patrick will detail simple steps we can all make in our own landscapes that will provide us with an attractive, biologically diverse and inviting space for all. We just need to start gardening with those “wild American eyes!”
