Warm Season Grasses and Sedges Certificate in Native Plants – Tifton

August 3, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Certificate in Native Plants Elective – Tifton: Warm Season Grasses and Sedges

$50 General Admission, $45 Members

The longleaf pine ecosystem has more ground cover plant diversity than any other in the United States and both warm-season grasses and sedges are an important component of the longleaf ground cover. Many of these grasses and sedges are valuable to wildlife for cover and forage and are an important source of fine fuel for prescribed burning. In this class, students will be introduced to the basic ecology and morphology of grasses and sedges in the lab using microscopes to examine the structures. Participants will then apply this knowledge in the field, learning to recognize a number of summer- and fall-flowering grass and sedge species. Please note that this class is part of a new program and is located outside of the Athens area.
