David acquired his master’s degree in horticultural science from North Carolina State University with a concentration in ornamental plant breeding. David worked as a graduate student for Dr. Dennis Werner and Dr. Tom Ranney\, where he developed a passion for horticultural science.  \n\n\n\nBailey Nurseries\, Inc. hired David in 2015 to act as the general manager and head plant breeder for Bailey Innovations. David now serves as the Director of Plant Breeding at Bailey Innovations\, where he leads the breeding team and coordinates plant trials from their nursery located in Winterville\, Georgia. \n\n\n\nPlease join David as he discusses the philosophy\, strategy and objectives for various plant breeding projects at Bailey Innovations. \n\n\n\nThe registration deadline is noon on Sept. 26.

DESCRIPTION:Sabrina Sewell\, botanist \n\n\n\n\nRegister Online\n\n\n\n\nExplore the biology of plants in this introduction to general plant anatomy\, morphology\, physiology\, evolution and development. This course presents the fundamental information about plants upon which other courses in the native plant certificate program will build\, particularly Plant Taxonomy. With an emphasis on relating form to function\, it surveys the origins of plants along with their basic forms and life processes. Students will become acquainted with plant tissues and structures\, as well as their roles in the life of plants. \n\n\n\nCourse Learning Objectives & Outline (topics covered will include): \n\n\n\n\nOrigins of plants and their basic groups\n\n\n\nBrief history and fundamentals of the science of botany\n\n\n\nPlant structures (internal and external) – their forms\, functions and development\n\n\n\nPlant life cycles and reproduction\n\n\n\nIntroduction to basic plant genetics\n\n\n\nEvolutionary adaptations of plants\n\n\n\n\nCourse Structure: \n\n\n\nThis class consists of three elements: a series of pre-recorded introductory videos\, in-person or at-home lab exercises exploring plant anatomy and a wrap-up discussion session through Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nPart 1 – Introductory Video Lectures – content released Oct. 15\n\n\n\nPart 2 – Exploratory Lab Exercises – self-paced at home OR in-person session Nov. 8\, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 – 3 p.m.\n\n\n\nPart 3 – Online Discussion Session – through Zoom Nov. 12\, 6 – 7 p.m.\n\n\n\n\nParticipants who sign up for the online lab session will be provided instructions for conducting their own activities at home. \n\n\n\nThis class is a core class for the Certificate in Native Plants.

DESCRIPTION:Free \n\n\n\nLeaders rotate among a group of local naturalists and biologists featuring guest guides. \n\n\n\nMeet at children’s garden arbor. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Nature Ramblers to learn more about the natural areas\, flora and fauna of the State Botanical Garden while making new friends and enjoying the fresh air. Rambles start with an inspirational reading by a nature writer such as Annie Dillard\, John Muir or Janisse Ray. Ramblers are encouraged to bring their own nature writings or favorite poems and essays to share with the group. This is a ramble\, not a hike; stopping to view interesting plants\, insects\, butterflies and mushrooms\, etc.\, along the way is part of the experience each week. You can join for just one or all sessions. These informal rambles are free\, but donations are accepted in the garden’s donation box in the lobby of the visitor’s center. SUMMARY:Sweet Pea Club
DESCRIPTION:Ages: 3-5 | $3 per class \n\n\n\n\nRegister Online\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the State Botanical Garden of Georgia education team for Sweet Pea Club at the Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden. Families will join one another for a morning of adventure in the garden through a variety of activities that can include songs\, puppets\, stories\, hikes and games.  Each week will highlight a new theme\, such as water\, soil\, foods we eat\, pollination\, plants or trees. The Sweet Pea Club program is an informal way to give young naturalists a better understanding of the importance of our shared earth. This program is geared towards ages 3-5. Please note this program typically takes place outdoors\, and the location may change depending on weather. Registration is required.
