Johnstone Lecture– A Taste of the Garden –

October 15, 2019, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Johnstone Lecture

$15 General Admission, Free for Members

Join Dr. Jeff Rapp, Bioscience Program Chair at Athens Technical College, and Brian Roth, Mark Mooney, and Jon Doss of Southern Brewing Company as they dive into the science behind domesticating wild yeast from plants growing in our beloved State Botanical Garden to making the Johnstone Wild Ale brewed with hops from the garden. They will focus on how collaborations with scientists in the community allowed Southern Brewing Company to build their unique house yeast program, and give a behind the scenes look into their yearly “in-gourd” fermentation using native microbes from the inside of pumpkins.

The reception beginning at 6 p.m. includes samplings of food and beverages from garden ingredients. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m.

The Johnstone Lecture, sponsored by FRIENDS of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, was named in honor of the State Botanical Garden’s first director, Dr. Francis E. Johnstone, Jr.
